New York City: Together with Climax Books, the lovechild of former Dazed editor-in-chief Isabella Burley, we threw a book bash in New York for the reissue of Happy Victims, the cult-classic by legendary Japanese photographer Kyoichi Tsuzuki, more than a decade after its first release. Equal parts fashion bible and love letter to obsessive collectors, the book lifts the veil on the anti-heroes of luxury brands—those who give up closets, apartments, and sometimes basic sanity to house their prized possessions. From Margiela and Comme des Garçons to Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Hermès, Agnès b., Dries Van Noten—you name it, they collect it. These are Kyoichi’s Happy Victims, and yes, they are as fascinating (and intense) as you’d imagine.
Isabella herself contributed the introduction to this new edition—a dedication to her own obsession with fashion and to the book’s enduring cultural grip. We joined her in her New York hub to celebrate Happy Victims in the presence of its original designer, Han Gao, alongside the city’s most devoted book lovers, Kyoichi fans, and loyal followers of Apartamento and Climax. As we celebrated the beauty of collecting—and of obsessing—as well as our shared love for great books, the night was marked by the unmistakable presence of longtime Apartamento friend and contributor Waylon Bone’s Polaroids. Scroll down for a glimpse of the night!
