Two days in Tunis with Rafram Chaddad

This summer, alongside regular Apartamento photographer Adrià Cañameras, I was lucky enough to be able to visit the multidisciplinary artist and self-taught food expert Rafram Chaddad. We’d come across Rafram’s work a few months earlier and had been in touch with him over email/Instagram, discussing semi-hair-brain schemes of coming over to his native Tunisia in order to prepare a feature for our current issue. Suddenly, a few stars aligned and our hair-brain scheme became a reality, the only catch being that we’d have no more than four days to travel from Barcelona to Palermo, then to the Sicilian island of Pantelleria, back to Palermo, then Rome, on to Tunis, and back to Barcelona again. We had so much to do in such little time that it felt like we were away for weeks.

When we finally arrived we were exhausted but excited to get to know Rafram and the city of Tunis. We got out of the airport, into a taxi, were immediately scammed into paying somewhere close to 10 times the normal price, and headed for the neighbourhood of Le Kram, a fisherman’s village on the outskirts of the city where Rafram lives. For the next two days Rafram showed us around, taking us to markets and restaurants and preparing meals for us at his place. The following is a diary of Adrià’s photos documenting the trip. The rest you’ll have to read about in the new issue.
