New York City: Over five years, Jeremy Liebman photographed what was closest to him as his children moved outward into the world and his father, the photographer Richard Liebman, slowly withdrew from it. Coincidence is their meeting point—a convergence of ways of apprehending meaning that is symmetrical, poignant, and uncannily coincidental. The book marks Jeremy’s debut photobook, driven by the simple necessity to document his life as it unfolds. ‘There is this feeling of meaning being just out of reach’, he says, looking at the photographs. Part meditation on time and inheritance, forgetting and remembering, Coincidence opens onto a space where language hovers at both its beginning and its end: ‘These small word fragments are suggestive, but never fully resolved’.
Ahead of the book’s launch, longtime friend and Apartamento contributor Waylon Bone meets Jeremy—also a longtime Apartamento collaborator—in his New York apartment. Together, they look back through some of Jeremy’s most memorable Apartamento magazine features, from Ingo Maurer to Mel Ottenberg, tracing the quiet influence of his father’s photography and the way Jeremy’s own practice has taken shape over time.
