‘When I received an invitation from the American Academy in Berlin to spend a few months in the German capital, I knew it would be my last chance to at last make Berlin Living Rooms. The Berlin of 2014 was a far cry from the divided and battered Berlin of the 1960s and 1970s I had known. It was now a glorious city where all the young people of the world wanted to move and where many famous artists had chosen to work. The Berliner Luft was still contagious. I embarked on my voyeuristic journey with the gusto and curiosity of a new visitor’.
Berlin Living Rooms is the third and final instalment in Dominique Nabokov’s trilogy of interior photography works, following New York Living Rooms (1998) and Paris Living Rooms (2002). Shot from 2014-2017, this volume turns its gaze to Berlin, offering an intimate portrait of the city through the private living spaces of its cultural figures. What began as a photo essay commissioned by The New Yorker in 1995 evolved into a three-part photographic journey spanning more than two decades. Nabokov calls these images her interior ‘portraits’, capturing rooms as reflections of the people who inhabit them. Re-released by Apartamento alongside texts by American novelist Darryl Pinckney and ZEITmagazin editor Christoph Amend, this final volume brings Nabokov’s decades-long photographic project to a close, preserving a glimpse of Berlin’s cultural life through the intimate details of its domestic interiors.
